99 DAYS
IN SE ASIA
APRIL 29 - AUG 6, 2008
What a blessing! What a challenge! For three months I taught as a volunteer teacher at Wat Preah Yesu Children's Home and school. I taught grades 2, 7, and 8 with subjects ranging from English, Math, Science and Bible.
This orphanage is home to about 130 orphans (although I think it's more now), and with outside students the school totals about 300. Many of the orphans have AIDS (either parents die or they are left at the orphanage). One of the hardest things was looking at many of my grade 2 students and wondering how long they will live.
Outside of school, the other English speaking teachers and I organized birthday dinners, bible studies, and cycling trips. We cycled to lake Barray, the Tonle Sap, and Angkor Wat. I know many of the students felt empowered through the learning and pushing their limits to what they could achieve.
After school let out, I spent some time traveling around Thailand, visiting the Tiger temple and the most beautiful place I've ever been to – the Erawan National Park. To see amazing pictures of a 7 level waterfall, tigers and more pictures of the orphanage, visit my blog at:
